As you pull out your sweaters and invest in the latest outerwear, do not forget to give a little attention to your hair! We are all so quick to update our wardrobe, makeup and skincare, but haircare is often set on the back burner. If you live in places where winter can be quite harsh like I do, it is important to invest extra time into your locks because colder, dryer temperatures can be damaging. To maintain healthy hair, there is a lot more you can do than just the usual mask and conditioner. Healthy hair means natural volume, length, strength and shine! If your hair could use a boost, read on for some of my essential haircare tips that no one ever talks about!

Coconut Oil Treatment

We all know how amazing and diverse coconut oil is. Not only is it a good alternative for cooking oil, but it can be used as a moisturizer, makeup remover, and even a hair treatment. Coconut oil naturally has good fatty acids that can actually work to repair damage, improve texture and add shine. For this treatment, I like to apply coconut oil to the shaft of my hair and leave it in for 5 minutes before hopping in the shower. Afterwards, you can shampoo as usual. I usually do this twice a week and find that it provides a protective coat to prevent your hair from soaking up too much water. This also strengthens your hair so you don’t have to worry about breakage and brittle strands.

Organic Rosewater

One of the most essential haircare tips I’ve learned this year is spritzing rose water into the roots of your hair. I’ll do this upon coming out of the shower and air drying my hair for a few minutes. In terms of haircare, rose water is known to be an astringent and can reduce oils and dandruff. It contains anti-inflammatory properties which is wonderful for people who tend to have a more sensitive scalp. Plus, it obviously smells good! You can either purchase your own rosewater (avoid any with too many chemicals) or DIY it and store in a spray bottle. There are tons of organic options you can get from Amazon.

Exfoliating Shampoo

You exfoliate your face, so why not your scalp? Well, to be honest, an exfoliating shampoo is actually more of a scalp treatment. There is a lot of product that can build up and a healthy scalp is essential for hair growth and strength. Right now, I am obsessed with the Briogeo Scalp Revival. It really does a good job of exfoliating and removing build up so I can achieve much healthier and fluffier hair. After all, a good foundation is key to success. You only need to do this 1-2x per week.

Drink Tart Cherry Juice

No matter what, good health always starts from within and food truly is medicine. Strong, shiny hair is dependent on your body’s supply of vital nutrients. To unlock your hair’s full potential, you want to ensure your body is intaking enough nutrients. Tart cherry juice extract is packed with Vitamins A, B, C and E, which can help with shine and texture. It also contains iron which prevents hair loss too. Mix it with water, teas, and smoothies and drink away!

Switch to Warm/Cool

For years, I was tricked into thinking that air drying your hair was the healthiest method of drying because it did not require any heat. However, later down the road, I discovered blow drying can actually be even better! Water causes hair to swell and the longer the hair stays in that condition, the more pressure is kept on each strand. For best results, let your hair naturally dry to about 70% and then use your blow dryer on the coolest setting, keeping the tool at least 6 inches away from your hair. If you keep up this method, your hair will surely thank you!
