One universal thing to arise from the pandemic is the need for a home office in households everywhere. This especially holds true as more companies realize many of their employees do not need to commute to an office to be successful in their role. If you are still working in a cluttered corner of the home, I’m here to tell you that you deserve more! In fact, a home office space increases productivity and peace of mind, as work and personal are able to be physically separated. Whether you have just moved into a new home or whether you plan on converting a guest room into a home office, here are my top 5 tips to creating the perfect home office.

Pick the right location

You spend hours a day, several days a week dedicating your precious time to your career, so you want to ensure that the space you are carving out from your home is ideal. The biggest thing to consider is how you like to work. If you need silence and minimal distraction to get into the zone. If you have clients and partners coming in and out of your office on a daily basis, find a spot in the home that is secluded and quiet – like a spare bedroom, basement, or even convert your garage into an office space.

Filter in natural light & give yourself a view

Going hand-in-hand with the aforementioned tip, natural light is a must have in every home office. The last thing you need is a dark, stress-inducing space that will deter you from maximizing your productivity. Daily sunlight intake is good for your overall health as it boosts your serotonin levels and therefore instills calm, positive vibes needed to get you through the work week.

I suggest facing your desk towards a window if the space allows it. Not only does this make for better lighting (ideal for endless Zoom meetings) but it also gives you something pleasant to look at when you glance up from your computer screen. I also love having natural light in my office to do any touch ups before a video call.

Choose furniture with a balance of Fashion & Function

Every desk, office chair, storage and sofa should work to better serve you. If you’re prone to sitting and working for long periods of time (like I do on my blog), then you should invest in a high-quality chair that supports that. If you often work on multiple devices at once, such as photography, filming, and Instagramming all the while working on a laptop, you need a large enough desk to stay organized.

Organization is key

Home organization is a must but this holds especially true in the office. We’re strong believers that every item should have a dedicated space because the last thing you need is a cluttered workspace. Explore creative file storage solutions, bookshelves, or even floor-to-ceiling cabinetry to stay tidy.

Ensure it flows with the house

Our last tip is to ensure the home office space still flows harmoniously with the rest of the house. Although you may want the space to be clearly differentiated between work and personal, you want to avoid being completely off-the-grid because then it seems like an afterthought. A change of paint color or an adjustment in furniture aesthetic is enough to carefully curate a complimentary home office space
