There has been a recent trend on TikTok spotlighting the increasing number of budding teens flocking to Sephora and persuading their parents to buy them Drunk Elephant products. While some agreed that this was the last thing they did during their adolescence, I’m sure many of us enjoyed experimenting with makeup around this age. The point being, it’s natural for teens to seek inspiration from older individuals, especially considering the abundance of beauty content on social media.

If you’re looking to guide your curious teen into skincare responsibly, you’re not alone. My daughters have shown an interest in makeup and beauty for quite some time, and I encourage their exploration as it fosters creativity. While both I and many dermatologists advise against harsh ingredients like retinol for teens, there are plenty of safe and age-appropriate skincare options available for them. Let’s get into them…

Cleanser

There’s no harm in instilling a proper, hygienic skincare routine with your teens, as long as you keep it simple. This means avoiding harsh active ingredients that could potentially overwhelm the skin and compromise their skin barrier. Introduce them to soft, gentle cleansers that can clarify their pores. Some of our household favorites are the Glow Recipe Blueberry Bounce or La Roche Posay Purifying Foaming Face Wash. As they enter their teen years and puberty comes into play, having an effective cleanser in place and help to mitigate unwanted acne.

Moisturizer

Much like the cleanser, you should avoid moisturizer ingredients formulated towards older adults. Products that target aging, pigmentation, and wrinkles aren’t necessary for teens. Instead, choose a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog pores. You can search for moisturizers with ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid that will work to keep the skin barrier hydrated.

SPF

Honestly, it’s never too early to teach your teens the importance of daily sunscreen use. It’s recommended by health professionals for everyone to wear an SPF of at least 30. This holds especially true for teens and younger children as they are likely spending more time outdoors and in direct sunlight. Provide them with sunscreen targeted towards younger adults or look for formulas intended for sensitive skin.

Spot Treatment

We all know the pains of fluctuating hormones as a teenager. If your child is starting to break out more, spot treatment can be used. You can consider products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, but be sure to consult with a professional if your teen intends to utilize this on a more long-term basis. Alternatively, pimple patches are easy and effective at targeting breakouts. They also make cute, colorfully designed ones that make skincare more fun for all.

All in all, keep your teen’s skincare routine simple and effective!
