The start of August has me feeling nostalgic as I am hit with a wave of “Back-to-School” marketing everywhere I go. As my girls are getting ready for the upcoming school year, I figured I might as well chime in. I won’t be physically stepping into class, but I do remember the anxiety and excitement that rushed in especially when it was time to buy new clothes. I always wanted to be the one who stood out and looked different from the rest (you can probably tell from most of my outfits today too)! So, I wanted to round up some affordable and non-basic looks to get you scholarly and ready for fall whether you’re going back to school or just feeling just as nostalgic as I am.

Prepster

It might be due to the fact that I heard Gossip Girl is returning, coupled with the Back-to-School time period, but I am feeling a certain type of way about preppy pieces. Prints such as plaid and argyle are just the right amount of collegiate you need. But there are ways to still keep these pieces contemporary and cool.

For instance, pair your argyle sweater with some updated jewelry and your favorite boyfriend jeans to prevent it from looking too stuffy – or match up a graphic tee with a pleated school-girl skirt.

I never had a problem with dressing loudly during my school days. Whilst many of my colleagues were rolling up to class in their baggy sweatpants, I was wearing a dress and kitten heels. My outfits were always a way of expressing myself so I never shied away from wearing what I love. This fall, step up your outfit game by becoming a master of print mixing. The art of being able to rock pinstripes, plaid, and florals in one outfit is a skill. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone this year at school!

Graphic Tee & Jeans

For those more relaxed days, you can never go wrong with a graphic t-shirt and jeans. However, there are ways to spruce up your look so it doesn’t come off as basic and trite. Firstly, find a t-shirt that really speaks to your personality. This could be a cheeky slogan or maybe your favorite band (great way to spark new conversations). Keep your denim fresh by opting for silhouettes like high-waisted or mom jeans. Lastly, top off your look with a pair of trendy shoes to tie everything together.

Statement Blazer

Nothing looks as smart as a tailored blazer. No matter what the occasion is, you can never go wrong with this outerwear option. Rather than plopping any old blazer on top of your outfit, treat it as the focal point of your look.

Fall Layering

Back-to-School also means back to fall, so it’s finally time to start integrating some tasteful layering into your looks. Just like the aforementioned preppy sweaters, cardigans will also have a huge purpose during this time period. Layer your favorite cardigan over a turtleneck and throw on a moto jacket for something cool and effortless. Add some jeans and your favorite booties and you’re ready to head out to class.
