As forecasted from fashion week street style and runways for a few seasons now, hair clips are everywhere – and barrettes are the hottest thing. I am really excited about all the creative ways women have been wearing these, from stacking multiple pieces along the hairline to an oversized bauble cinching onto a side-swept pony. There are countless ways to style these pretty yet practical accessories. However, like many of us, perhaps the last time you actually wore a barrette was during your formative years and you’re a little concerned you may end up looking like a 6th grader. We want those schoolgirl days to stay behind us, so read ahead for my tips on how to navigate the latest throwback trend and wear a barrette!

Size matters

This hair accessory moment is a trend that’s been building momentum for a while now, and now that it’s here it won’t be ignored! When it comes to barrettes, it seems that bolder and bigger is indeed better. An easy way to incorporate an oversized clip with your hair is just parting your hair in a deep side part and clipping the fake side-swept “bangs”, or twisting your hair together at the nape of your neck and pinning it together like a pony.

Gold & Pearls

A key difference with this hairstyle than your grade school days is that barrettes are now metals like gold or adorned with pearls and jewels. Pulling your hair back and framing your face with such beautiful accessories both compliments

and adds to your features in a wonderfully decorative manner. I like to wear the prettier feminine barrettes next to my face, right up by my eye liner.

Mix & match

If you don’t feel comfortable with a large and in charge barrette (some can get quite heavy on the scalp), one of the more fun ways to also make a statement is wearing an assortment of minimal, more bobby pin-esque clamps in a row at the side of your head by the ear. You can alternate or repeat tiny clips or studded pins, and don’t worry about making them parallel, let them look here or there. If you’re like me, you’ll also want to try this stacked look with some bolder gold barrettes mixed in too!

What are you favorite ways to wear barrettes? Do you have a preference for the big & bold or softer feminine pins?
