THE JESSICA EDIT

Your Coat Is Not Wrong. The Length Is Fighting the Rest of Your Outfit.

Date: Posted on Category: Fashion, Outfit

A coat can look wonderful hanging open in the fitting room and strangely fussy over the outfit you wore there. Suddenly a jacket hem, a sweater hem and a skirt hem are negotiating for the same few inches.

Before blaming your height, compare where those edges land. I would change the relationship between the layers first. Sometimes that means a shorter coat. Sometimes it means a longer one. Sometimes the coat stays and the untucked sweater goes.

For shorter shapes, compare COS’s cropped wool jacket and Quince’s merino shirt jacket. Madewell’s boxy suede jacket brings a different texture (sizes are limited); J.Crew’s cropped flannel jacket is another direction to consider. These are shopping suggestions, not identified pieces from the photographs.

A short jacket leaves the pleated skirt visible. The shopping picks are alternatives to this outfit.

Give wide trousers some room

Try a short jacket with a simple top and your widest trousers. Look at where the jacket ends against the waistband. For a rounder trouser shape, use the barrel-pants volume check. Then compare a longer coat over the same clothes. Worn open, it frames the trousers inside a longer outer line.

Neither combination needs to make your body look smaller. Choose the shape you enjoy. Quince’s cropped leather jacket offers a button-front shape; Reiss’s Jaque jacket brings twin pockets, with limited sizes available. Check those details with the actual trouser volume before choosing.

Shorter outer layers

Six cropped shapes to compare with the trousers already in your closet.

Watch where the hems meet

A skirt showing below a coat is not a styling emergency. If two nearly matching hems look accidental to you, compare a clearly shorter jacket with a coat nearer the skirt’s length. Keep the skirt and shoes unchanged.

I would compare TOTEME’s double-breasted coat with Max Mara’s Manuela wrap coat for different fastenings and outlines. Victoria Beckham’s Catriona coat adds an army-green option. Product photographs suggest possibilities; your own layers decide where each hem lands.

A long outer layer frames a short skirt here. This is a different outfit, not a controlled before-and-after test.

Longer coats and a quiet base

Five coat options and a plain knit. Compare garment measurements, cut and the layers underneath.

Fasten it over the actual outfit

Bring the sweater you expect to wear underneath. Fasten the coat, reach forward and sit down. The open-coat pose has not answered whether your sleeves fit or the collar feels crowded.

For the comparison, TOTEME’s wide-leg cady pants give you a fuller lower shape, while Jil Sander’s crepe midi skirt changes the hem relationship. Try Vince’s wide-sleeve sweater beneath the coat before committing to that sleeve combination. A belt cannot solve cramped shoulders.

The outfit underneath

Six bases and layers, including jeans, trousers, a midi skirt, socks, tights and a knit.

Keep the shoes in the picture

Do the last check in the shoes you plan to wear. Compare NEOUS’s Poera 40 boots with AEYDE’s Hedvig boots to see what a different toe and heel do beneath the hem. Check clearance while walking and using stairs.

Add your scarf too. Quince’s navy cashmere scarf and Johnstons of Elgin’s charcoal scarf offer two quieter finishes. If everything gathers around the collar, remove one layer before replacing the coat. For a finishing detail without another layer, try one brooch with room around it.

Take full-length photos from the same position. I would buy the coat that works while walking, sitting and getting on with the day. The fitting-room pose should be the least demanding part of owning it.

The final scarf-and-boot check

Four ankle-boot options and two scarves. Check current sizes and return terms before ordering.
