By this point in summer, I often find myself conflicted. On one hand, I am sad to see the warm weather go, but I am also equally excited for the return of autumn! I look forward to this timeframe every year for fashion because it means the return of boots, light layering, and cozy knits. While it is fun and exciting to shop for new items for the approaching season, don’t be so quick to pack your current wardrobe away in boxes. There are some particular items from the current season that can render itself useful next season too. I went back through my wardrobe and locked in on 7 key summer staples you can take into fall. Here’s how to rock them so you can maximize your wardrobe.

Florals aren’t necessarily groundbreaking for the summer but they could be for the fall! Rather than being quick to ditch all your favorite flowy dresses, keep a few around because they’re actually incredibly easy to adjust for the change of season. In order to make it fall appropriate, it all comes down to the layering. Pop on a turtleneck underneath the dress or drape on an oversized cardigan on top. Complete the full look with some ankle booties and a dark handbag.

Nude Denim

If you are not a stickler about the, “no white after Labor Day” rule, you should have no trouble at all easing your neutral denim into the fall season.

Honestly, you could play up with the stark white of the look by continuing the fresh ecru/beige trend that was prevalent in the summer.

Just pop on an oversized blazer or other outerwear option. Or you can go the other route and darken up white denim with a black top and some dark knee-high boots.

Slip Skirt

Summer 2019’s cult classic in terms of fashion was definitely the slip skirt. Whether they were solid or in some variation of animal print, you certainly saw them all over the streets and on your instagram feed. Let the trend live on into the autumn by adding some accessories to make it more approachable for cooler weather. Swap out the sandals for booties and layer on a moto jacket overtop so you can stay chic but still warm.

One Shoulder Pieces

Summer is all about baring midriffs and decolletages which means trading out your off-the-shoulder pieces for one-shoulder tops. While these are also amazing for the summer, they can also be adapted for the fall!

Again, this comes down to selective styling. Tuck it into your favorite high-waisted jeans or add a knit midi skirt for an instant autumn outfit. This will be a go-to look for me this season.

Sneakers

In terms of footwear, chunky trainers aren’t going anywhere and I’m not complaining about it. Let’s be honest, the beginning of fall can get pretty cold in the city so sneakers will live on even through winter. Pair your trainers with your favorite maxi dress – or style it with cropped jeans and a sweatshirt.

Baguette Bag

My favorite accessory this summer was definitely the resurgence of the 90’s classic. Baguette bags will have no slowing down, even as we ease our way into Fall/Winter 2019. You can pair this long bag with just about any outfit under the sun so you’ll have no trouble at all transitioning it with your cooler climate outfits.

Peasant Top

Peasant or milkmaid tops were also a hit of the summer but their reign doesn’t have to end here. Keep the vibe going by styling your romantic top with some high-waisted wool trousers. Or get a bit more daring and wear your peasant top with some leather leggings. The demure of the top and the boldness of the pants balance each other, making it a trendy night out look!
